Truckee incorporated 1993 (town existed since 1863). Named after Paiute chief Truckee who guided emigrants. The transcontinental railroad reached here in 1868, making it a major lumber and ice shipping point. Commercial Row preserves brick and stone buildings from 1870s-1890s. Population approximately 16,000. Elevation 5,817 feet.
Receives 200+ inches annual snowfall at town level (400+ inches at resort elevations). Donner Pass (7,056 feet), 8 miles west, was site of 1846-47 Donner Party entrapment. Five ski areas within 12-mile radius: Palisades Tahoe, Northstar (3,170 acres), Sugar Bowl (opened 1939, California's third ski resort), Boreal, and Donner Ski Ranch. Summer access to Donner Lake (3 miles long, 954 feet deep).
Commercial Row features 1870s-1890s brick structures built after 1891 fire destroyed wooden buildings. Former icehouse, railroad depot, and lumber mills. Truckee Hotel (1873) still operates. Jail Museum displays 1875 jail cells. Walking tour maps available at visitor center.

Winter3 miles long, 954 feet deep. Formed by glacial activity 2 million years ago. Water temperature reaches 65-70°F in summer. Public beaches at Donner Memorial State Park and West End Beach. Launch ramp for kayaks and paddleboards. Less crowded than Lake Tahoe beaches.
SummerSite where Donner Party (87 emigrants) became snowbound October 1846-April 1847. Monument base height (22 feet) marks snow depth that winter. Emigrant Trail Museum documents westward migration. Park includes 3 miles of Donner Lake shoreline and hiking trails.
