Tahoe City established 1864 as lumber town serving Comstock Lode mining operations. Located at Lake Tahoe's outlet where Truckee River begins its 121-mile journey to Pyramid Lake, Nevada. Population approximately 1,500. Elevation 6,230 feet. The Fanny Bridge (named for tourists viewing fish) marks the lake's only outlet.
Truckee River Dam (1913) controls lake level within 6-foot range mandated by federal court. Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) hosted 1960 Winter Olympics, 8 miles north via SR-89. The West Shore remains less developed than South Lake, with SR-89 providing access to state parks and beaches extending 13 miles to Emerald Bay.
8-acre public park adjacent to downtown. Sandy beach, playground, picnic facilities, and lakefront lawn. Free summer concert series (Wednesdays, July-August). Pier extends into lake. Limited parking; arrive before 10am summer weekends.
Year-RoundPaved, mostly flat 5.5-mile trail from Tahoe City (6,230 feet) to Olympic Valley (6,200 feet). Follows Truckee River through pine and aspen forest. Multiple bike rental shops in Tahoe City. Trail connects to additional paths extending to Squaw Valley and Dollar Point.
Summer & FallHost venue for 1960 Winter Olympics (first televised Winter Games). 3,600 acres with 2,850-foot vertical drop. Renamed from Squaw Valley in 2021. Base elevation 6,200 feet, summit 9,050 feet. Aerial tram operates year-round to High Camp (8,200 feet) for dining and activities.
Year-RoundOperated by North Lake Tahoe Historical Society. Collections include Washoe Indian basketry, 1920s-30s photographs, and railroad artifacts. Named for dam gatekeeper's cabin (original 1910 structure relocated). Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum shares building (2,500+ baskets).
SummerEasy access to Meeks Bay, Chambers Beach, and other stunning West Shore beaches. Less crowded than South Lake and incredibly scenic.

Distance: ~200 miles | Time: ~3.5 hours under normal conditions | Take I-80 East to Truckee. Exit onto SR-89 South and follow it 14 miles to Tahoe City. Scenic drive alongside Truckee River.
