Getting There from the Bay Area

Route: US-50 via Sacramento

Distance: ~200 miles | Time: ~3.5 hours under normal conditions | Take I-80 East to US-50 East (exit at Sacramento). Continue on US-50 through Placerville and up to South Lake Tahoe.

Important Considerations

  • Refuel in Placerville before the final climb (limited gas stations on US-50)
  • Winter: tire chains or 4WD required during snow. Check Caltrans for chain controls
  • Friday afternoon traffic: heaviest 3-7pm. Depart early morning or after 7pm to avoid
  • Sunday return traffic: peaks 2-6pm. Leave before 1pm or after 7pm
